Don’t you feel happy when having good food in delightful atmosphere? Even if it is not a sumptuous meal. Some may have experienced feeling lighter spiritually or feeling relaxed and tears fall down naturally while having meal.
How do you spend mealtime?
What we eat each day, with whom, under what kind of environment to build up our bodies and minds. In a word, “food” is the most important thing for our lives. However, due to increasing number of double-income family today, I hear from many people that they don’t have time to spend mealtime with their family or they don’t have enough time for cooking.
Have breakfast separately
Father and children to spend time only on weekend
Mother and children to have dinner hastily after coming home
Children who go to cram school to eat dinner alone after school or to buy something to eat
at cram school and so forth.
Many of you may be aware of the team “eating alone”
Cut down on “mealtime”
Society has been promoting gender balanced workforce which encourages women to have career and as a result of this tendency to be increased, mealtime has been cut down.
Have a quick meal in spare time at fast food restaurant, a convenience store or a cheap chain restaurant. In double-income family, both husband and wife work from early morning until late night and family have read-to-eat stuff or instant food for dinner. Children to grow up without knowing the pleasure of eating or real good flavors.
Under such environment, both adults and children are not able to have time “to rest their minds” and they will be truly exhausted. What is our purpose of working anyway?
Lifestyle to focus on “food”
Ever since I have moved to Nagano Prefecture in March, I am able to spend more time for mealtime than before.
Variety of vegetable dishes made out of vegetable which were grown in my own yard and given from neighbor. Have mealtime with all family members together. As I began to aim a way of life with a focus on “food”, my way of thinking became very simple. What is the purpose of working, how to spend time with children, daily life rhythm and what to eat. It brings “comfortable life” at all meanings.
Mealtime with family gives an energy to soul!

Mealtime with family gives an energy to children’s soul. Even children study hard and cram knowledge into their head, it is a useless treasure if children do not have healthy body and mind.
Some people think that cooking is cumbersome. But it is not necessary to have well-prepared dishes. Having fresh salad makes mealtime very special. The most important thing is to enjoy time and meal together.
To start with drawing your ideal mealtime
This may be a good opportunity for each of you to stop lifestyle which “eat something in spare time” but to think and to draw your ideal mealtime. It might be difficult to significantly change current lifestyle but there should be a little thing you can do toward your “ideal lifestyle". And I am sure that your way of life would be greatly changed. I personally believe that our society would significantly change once it becomes a place where all of us can enjoy mealtime with our family.
